The Valmorel village:
If you come from Geneva, Valmorel is the first ski resort you reach in the Tarentaise valley in France’s Savoie region. It is the main village of the Grand Domaine ski area. Why try it? Created in 1976 at 1,400m, Valmorel is one of the few purpose-built resorts in France that’s not a concrete eyesore. Learning from earlier mistakes, planners stuck to classic Savoyard design: low-rise wooden buildings and sloping slate roofs. Most accommodation is close to the lifts, and free eco-shuttle buses connect outlying hamlets. Le Bourg, the pedestrianized high street, is full of shops, restaurants and bars. It’s friendly, relaxed, predominantly French and very family-focused.

OUR TIPS
Best route to Valmorel
IMPORTANT! When you are in the Tarentaise Valley on the N90, ignore the first sign indicating Valmorel. Make sure you take the exit 38 that will pass by Aigueblanche so that you are on the largest and most comfortable route to Valmorel. And you can also make a quick stop in Aigueblanche to buy your groceries before the climb (see below).
First things first, go to La Croissantine, the bakery in the Village to order your daily hot croissants, pain au chocolat and french baguette. They will be delivered every day right at the door of the apartment. A must do!
Take full advantage of what the resort organizes:

-
Visit their website Valmorel.com
-
Install the Valmorel mobile app de valmorel, super useful for live slopes and lifts information as well as village activities.
-
Pay a visit to l'Office du tourisme (OT) and ask for the booklet with the weeks' activities. They usually offer plenty of things to do for the entire family.
Groceries
There are plenty of small shops in Valmorel, and especially the ones selling local products... Don't miss the local Beaufort cheese or the Génépi!

However, it is much more practical and economical to do most of the week's groceries before the climb to Valmorel in Aigueblanche, in the Super U market.
Ski and slopes
To start your journey, or climb back on top, try to use the Lanchettes as often as you can (next to the chalet) as it is often quiet when the other lifts are busy.

For those who prefer off-piste feeling and fresh powder snow (as well as security), look first for the FreeRide zones, they are all great. In particular, the FreeRide zone of the Riondet is our favorite with stunning views and long (very long!) ride.

Don't miss the slopes from the lift "Lauzière" on St François Longchamps side.

One of our favourites? Lanchettes, when there's plenty of fresh snow, although it's not so easy for kids or beginners due to the bumps.

For the kids, follow all "Pirates" slopes! Or consider going to the Combelouvière side, it's easier and quieter.
Eating on the slopes
Our favourite is La Vache Orange, on top of the Lanchettes lift.
We also love Les voiles du Nants on top of the Altispace Lift.
Both have stunning view over the valley and the Mont Blanc.

On evenings, usually after we pick-up the kids from the their afternoon ESF lessons, we stay in the Mottet for a few drinks at the Chalet du Mottet while they can still play in the snow. From there, it is very easy to go back to the chalet with a short slope (Cascade) even in the dark. Or a short walk if you indulged in one drink too much for elegant skiing ;)
More eating
Do not miss our hidden jewel L'Oxygene.
Prices are relatively low for the great quality you will find in this chic and cosy restaurant. A real discovery!
It is situated in La Charmette and you can get there by car, or by bus (10min from Valmorel).

In the village, there are plenty of good options for all tastes.
We like eating crêpes with the kids at La Flambée, we like Le petit Prince, La Table du Berger both with a nice atmosphere and friendly owners... And we go to Jumbo Lolo for drinks and cocktails.
And from time to time, we love a very good pizza delivery at the apartment from la casa Pizz

Rental
We've always been very happy with the service at Go Sport (discount given through our manager) but we guess the other shops have their merits as well...

Swimming pool/SPA
In the same group of chalets, about 40m away, you will find the commercial resort la Grange aux Fées which proposes a spa service. If you use their (quite enjoyable!) spa services you will be able to access the swimming pool (which we find quite crowded in high season)
See tarriffs here Spa Ô des Cimes.
Another spa alternative is the newly built hotel Oxygène (not tested yet), the spa in the new Althea Chalet or the spa on the main street (rue du Bourg), Les 5 mondes
